Mumbai City FC

Mumbai City FC is a prominent Indian professional football club situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Competing in the Indian Super League (ISL), the top tier of Indian football, Mumbai City FC holds the distinction of being the first club to win both the ISL title and the League Winners’ Shield (premiership) in a single season, which they achieved during the 2020–21 season.

Throughout its journey, Mumbai City FC has seen the stewardship of notable figures. In the first season, former England international Peter Reid managed the club, with Freddie Ljungberg as the marquee player. The second season saw Nicolas Anelka take on the role of marquee player cum manager. Subsequently, in 2016, Diego Forlán joined as the marquee player while Alexandre Guimarães took over as the new manager. In 2018, Jorge Costa assumed the position of head coach, guiding the team to the playoffs.

In 2020, Sergio Lobera was announced as the manager, and under his guidance, Mumbai City FC achieved remarkable success, clinching both the Indian Super League Winners’ Shield and the league title during the 2020–21 season.

 

Des Buckingham took over as the head coach before the 2021–22 Indian Super League season. Under his leadership, Mumbai City FC achieved a historic feat by securing two wins in the 2022 AFC Champions League group stage, becoming the first Indian team to do so. The team finished second in the group, narrowly missing out on advancing to the next round.

During the 2022–23 Indian Super League season, Mumbai City FC experienced an incredible 18-game unbeaten streak, the longest in the history of the Indian Super League. They went on to win the League Winners’ Shield for the second time in three years, topping the league table.
