The expansive premises of the grand Fort William, the headquartersof the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, recently played host to the legendary Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri during the on-going 133rd IndianOil Durand Cup, being held in the city of Kolkata.
It must be remembered in this context that Sunil, the evergreen face of Indian football, is an Army kid and got first spotted as a bright talent thanks to his exploits in the Durand Cup, which used to be held in Delhi during those days.
On the occasion of his felicitation, the talisman fondly recalled his days in Fort William as a kid and thanked the Indian Army for instilling the basic life values in him, which helped him grow in the field of his choosing. It was a memorable day for the children of the personnel and staff at Fort William as well, as they thronged to catch a glimpse of the legend, requesting him for autographs and selfies.
Sunil, played the semi-final match on August 27, 2024, took out time from his busy schedule to honour the invite of the Lieutenant General RC Tiwari , UYSM, AVSM, SM, GOC – In -C , Eastern Command. While it was nostalgic for the footballer, the event evoked unparalleled pride in the minds of all attendees in seeing the phenomenal growth of one of their own.
Sunil was born to Nepalese parents K. B. Chhetri, an officer in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers of the Indian Army, and Sushila Chhetri in Secunderabad, India. His father played football for the Indian Army football team while his mother and her twin sister played for the Nepal women’s national team.
Sunil today plays as a forward for Indian Super League club Bengaluru FC. He is known for his link-up play, goal scoring abilities, and leadership. He is the fourth-highest international goalscorer and is also the most-capped Indian player and the all-time top goal scorer of the Indina national team. He is widely regarded as the greatest Indian football player of all time.
