In the second match of the 129th Durand Cup, Quess East Bengal defeated Army Red by 2-0, in a packed home ground. The club, now in its centenary year, opens its season with a thrilling victory.

The match remained goalless for most of the time, with Jaime Santos Colado finally coming to the rescue as he netted the ball from a free-kick in the 85th minute.

Initially Quess East Bengal looked a little slippery when it came to defence, but thankfully for the team, the opponents, Army Red could not capitalize them, though they got some real good chances. In the 24th minute, Sushil Shah from Army Red received a Yellow Card and just after three minutes, Alwin was shown another. A few seconds before half time, Zothanpuia received the third yellow card for the team after a heavy tackle on Brandon Vanlalremdika.

The nail in the coffin came when Army Red’s goal-keeper Muhammed Shanoos was shown a Red Card for trying to stop Bidyasagar Singh.

Incidentally, Bidyasagar Singh, who came in as a substitute, scored the second goal for QEB, at 90+1’.

In the post-match press conference, Mr. Anustup Sarkar, Head Coach cum Manager of the Army Red, expressed his dissatisfaction with the refereeing. QEB’s head coach, Alejandro Menendez Garcia, however was quite happy with how his boys played, having hardly had any practice before the tournament.

At the opening match yesterday, Mohun Bagan defeated Mohammedan Sporting by 2-0 and their arch-rivals Quess East Bengal too open this year’s Durand Cup with the same scoreline. Co-incidentally both are coached by a Spaniard, first time in the history of football in Kolkata.

The next match-day for the oldest tournament in the country is on August 5, when Bengaluru FC face off against Army Red and Navy against ATK at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in a double-header.
