MOHUN BAGAN DEFEAT ATK AT THEIR HOME GROUND
Mohun Bagan continue their uninterrupted run in the 129th Durand Cup, as they defeat ATK, the ISL home team from Kolkata, 2-1 in the former’s home stadium.
Heavy rainfall since morning meant difficult playing conditions on ground. Due to the slippery surface, both teams had difficulty in accelerating. The first prolific breakthrough came in the form of a header from Francisco Morante Martinez as he received the ball from a corner kick by Joseba Beitia in the 34th minute. Mohun Bagan edged past ATK 1-0.
In the second half, at the 53rd minute, Beitia himself scored Mohun Bagan’s second goal for the day, thanks to a low ball from Suhair. ATK consolidated their attack and in the 79th minute, Ashis Pradhan went past the Mohun Bagan defence to score his team’s only goal for the match.
The 6 minutes of injury time saw the most activity on field. At 90+4, Sankar Roy, the Mohun Bagan goalie made a brilliant save to deny ATK their second goal. Seconds before the final whistle, Surabuddin Mollick of Mohun Bagan saw a red card.
Mohun Bagan, nonetheless, confirm their semi-final berth with six points from two matches. Their next match is against Navy on August 17 while ATK will meet Mohammedan SC the preceding day, August 16, both at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
