“The Guardian of Guwahati: Gurmeet’s Durand Cup Destiny”

On a humid Kolkata night in August 2024, 48,000 fans inside the Salt Lake Stadium held their breath. The Durand Cup final had gone to penalties, and a 24-year-old from Narwana, Haryana, stood alone in the goalmouth. Gurmeet Singh Chahal, once a forgotten benchwarmer, now had the weight of NorthEast United’s history on his shoulders. Moments later, his gloves turned destiny—saving two penalties to deliver the club’s maiden Durand Cup title.

From Village Dreams to Professional Football

Gurmeet Singh’s story begins in Narwana, a small town in Haryana where football wasn’t the dominant sport. As a tall teenager, one of his seniors suggested he try goalkeeping, and that simple suggestion would change the course of his life.

His talents were soon spotted by DSK Shivajians FC, where he played in the U-18 Youth League. In 2018, at just 19 years old, NorthEast United FC signed him, marking the beginning of his Indian Super League (ISL) journey.

One of the most memorable moments for me was to help NorthEast win the first trophy after waiting a decade long.”Gurmeet walked away with the Golden Glove, recognition that crowned him as one of the finest keepers in Indian football. From being released by NorthEast in 2021 to returning as their saviour three years later, his career had come full circle.

The Durand Cup triumph transformed Gurmeet’s career trajectory. From being a goalkeeper struggling for opportunities, he became a household name in Indian football. His performances caught the attention of national team selectors, earning him call-ups to the Indian squad.
