Asia’s oldest football tournament now in five states as Imphal makes a comeback
Introduction: Bodoland Football Club is a professional football club based in Kokrajhar, Assam, India. Established in 2022, the team was the first Bodoland professional team to compete in the national football tournament, the Durand Cup, in 2023. Club's goals include reviving football in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and competing at the national level. History: Bodoland, as the name suggests is a community club born out of autonomous region of Bodoland with an aim to provide opportunities to the youngsters from the region to pursue a football career. The club was officially registered with AIFF when the Govt. of Bodoland Territorial Region decided to organise a grand football tournament – First Inter Sixth Schedule Football League 2022 (ISPL), collaborating teams from the sixth scheduled autonomous councils of Northeast states of India. The club competed in the first ever Inter Sixth Schedule Football League 2022 (ISPL) and were crowned champions after defeating LAI Autonomous District Council. The tournament was also graced by the current President of AIFF, Shri Kalyan Chaubey and crowd of more than thirty thousand in the SAI STC Kokrajhar. The Club also competed in the 132nd Durand Cup 2023, where the team was put in Group-F alongside Rajasthan United FC, Odisha FC, and the Indian Army Football Team. The club is sponsored by the administrative of Bodoland Territorial Region (Council) for the Durand Cup. Bodoland region consists of five districts of Assam – Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri with neighbours - Bhutan from the North and Bangladesh from the South. It is a home to the Bodo Tribe in the state of Assam. The Government of India has provided a special autonomous status under the sixth schedule of Indian Constitution. The special status was provided as a guardiancy to preserve the culture of the Bodo tribe as well as against the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and among other various social reasons.
