As the longest-running football tournament in Asia, the IndianOil Durand Cup has always attracted a unique mix of legacy clubs, promising local teams, and visiting international sides. This year, Malaysia’s Armed Forces Football Team known as Persatuan Bolasepak Angkatan Tentera (ATM FT) added to that rich tapestry by stepping onto Indian soil for their Durand Cup debut.
Despite a tough first outing, where they lost 0–6 to home side Shillong Lajong FC, the Malaysian players remained upbeat, soaking in the atmosphere at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and reflecting on what it meant to be part of one of Asia’s most historic football competitions.
“For us, it’s not just about results,” said Masrizar bin Mizalan – Assistant Head Coach. “It’s about building international exposure for our players and experiencing football cultures different from ours. Indian football has grown a lot, and we are seeing that first-hand here.”
The Malaysian Armed Forces team, representing the nation’s military football programme, has long been known for its discipline and tactical organization. Participating in the Durand Cup is part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties through sport and provide its players with challenging match experiences.
“The pace of the Indian game surprised some of our younger players,” Masrizar bin Mizalan admitted. “Clubs here are fast, technically skilled, and tactically aware. It’s great for our players to see that up close.”
While the score line was lopsided, the match was played in front of a passionate Shillong crowd, something the Malaysian squad appreciated. “The fans here are incredible. We have felt very welcome, and that support for football is something we respect.”
The team will regroup for the remaining group matches, aiming to make the most of the experience. “We’re learning from every minute on the pitch,” Masrizar bin Mizalan – Assistant Head Coach said. “Durand Cup is not just a tournament; it’s history. We are proud to be part of it.”
Their presence highlights the Durand Cup’s commitment to fostering international football relations and bringing diverse styles and stories to Indian fans.
As ATM FT prepares for its next challenge, they remain focused on growth, camaraderie, and making their mark, on the pitch and in the hearts of fans.
