“I just wanted to prove I belong on that stage,” says Ashley Alban Koli, eyes lit with both pride and purpose, as he recalls the moment the ball flew off his left boot and into the net from 25 yards out against Inter Kashi in the 133rd edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup.
It wasn’t just a goal—it was a declaration. At that moment, under the floodlights of the Kishore Bharati Krirangan, Ashley wasn’t just another youngster in Mohammedan’s reserve squad. He was the player everyone turned to. And he delivered.
In the hallowed grounds of the Kolkata maidans where legends are born and dreams take flight, few stories capture the essence of Indian football’s emerging talent pipeline better than that of Ashley Alban Koli.
At just 24, this nimble-footed winger has traversed a remarkable journey from the bustling academies of Mumbai to the historic black and white stripes of Mohammedan Sporting, establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents in contemporary Indian football.
Ashley’s football odyssey began in the youth systems that have become the backbone of Indian football development. His early years were spent honing his craft across multiple prestigious academies, including stints with Mumbai City FC’s renowned development program.
He then grew through clubs such as Punjab FC, Jamshedpur FC, and Churchill Brothers FC, before settling down with the Black Panthers.
For Koli, the Durand Cup has become nothing short of a personal showcase of evolution and brilliance. His performances in this historic tournament have not only demonstrated his technical prowess but also his ability to rise to the occasion when it matters most.
“The Durand Cup taught me to play under pressure, to rise when the stakes are highest. It’s more than a tournament—it’s where we grow up as players.” he says.
In the ongoing 2025 Durand Cup campaign, Ashley continued to impress with his creative play and tactical awareness. During the dramatic encounter against Diamond Harbour FC, he showcased his vision and composure under pressure when he picked out Thokchom’s run from the right with a perfectly weighted floater from the centre of midfield, creating a crucial opportunity for his team.
The young winger’s versatility and technical skills have not gone unnoticed by football experts. His evolving career is already showing signs of a player steadily ascending the ranks of Indian football. Set-piece conversion at such a stage speaks volumes of the youngster’s technical prowess and fans will hope to see a new breakout star emerge in the remainder of the competition!!
