“More Than a Match, It’s Our Bloodline”-The Kolkata Derby through Generations
The soul of Manipur finally found its voice again. On a humid Wednesday afternoon at the iconic Khuman Lampak stadium, the Imphal Derby between NEROCA FC and TRAU FC didn’t just mark the return of football to India’s football factory – it signaled the rebirth of hope in a region which has been through some tough times.
The 134th edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, chose the perfect game for its Manipur homecoming. What unfolded was nothing short of magical – a sold-out stadium erupting with 35,000 passionate voices, creating an atmosphere so electric that it could be felt miles away from the venue.
The match itself lived up to every expectation. TRAU took the lead through Khunjamayum Raj Singh in the 58th minute, sending their supporters into delirium. But in the dying moments of stoppage time, NEROCA’s Arunkumar Singh struck a dramatic equalizer, ensuring that neither side would claim bragging rights but both would share in the glory of football’s return.
As one TRAU supporter emotionally declared: “A win for my team would be the icing on the cake, but this tournament itself is a victory for Manipur’s spirit”. Those words encapsulated the evening perfectly.
The Durand Cup, with its 137-year legacy, has once again proven why it remains the crown jewel of Indian football. By choosing Imphal as a host city, the tournament organizers sent a clear message: Manipur’s contribution to Indian football – over 50 players to national teams – will never be forgotten and always be celebrated.
The Imphal Derby is back, and Indian football is certainly richer for it!!
