The Architect of Dreams: Ishfaq Ahmed’s enduring love affair with the Durand Cup

On the storied grounds where Asia’s oldest football tournament unfolds, few names resonate with the same emotional depth as Ishfaq Ahmed. Born in the picturesque valleys of Srinagar in 1983, this Kashmiri central midfielder has woven his life story through the very fabric of Indian football– with the prestigious Durand Cup serving as both witness and stage, to his remarkable journey from a young dreamer to a living legend.

As he stands on the touchline of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup, commanding Real Kashmir FC with the same passion that once made him captain Mohun Bagan as the first Kashmiri to lead the historic club, Ahmed’s story reads like poetry written in sweat and determination. His eyes, weathered by decades of chasing footballs and dreams, still sparkle with the same intensity that once mesmerized fans of Indian football.

The Valley Boy’s Ascent

The story begins in the Barbar Shah locality of Srinagar, where a young Ahmed first discovered his love for the beautiful game at Biscoe School. While cricket dominated conversations in most Indian households, football was his first love, his refuge, his calling.

Those early days of kicking a ball around with the YMCA, was where the foundation stones of a legacy, that would echo through the corridors of Indian football for decades, were laid. At just 17, he led YMCA to the state league title, becoming the tournament’s top scorer, giving a glimpse of the magic that was to follow.

His journey from the frost-kissed grounds of Kashmir to the professional circuits was nothing short of extraordinary. After catching scouts’ attention during the Dutta Ray Trophy, where he was named the tournament’s best player, Ahmed signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), scoring seven crucial goals against heavyweight opponents like East Bengal, Dempo SC, and Churchill Brothers.

The Durand Cup Dream realized

It was with Dempo that Ahmed’s Durand Cup romance truly began. During his four-season stay with the Goan giants from 2003 to 2007, he tasted his first major success, winning the National Football League twice, a Federation Cup, and most memorably, a Durand Cup title in 2006. The trophies weren’t just another piece of silverware, it was validation of a valley boy’s dreams, proof that talent knows no geographical boundaries.

“Those were incredible days. When I started out, the Durand Cup was held in Delhi, and I was lucky to win it with Dempo. We were I-League champions also that year. I still remember the final at Ambedkar Stadium, where we beat JCT 1–0. The Durand Cup holds special memories for me. Growing up, we always heard about the Federation Cup and Durand Cup and playing in them was every young footballer’s dream. Winning it was an unforgettable moment”, Ishfaq recalled, when asked about the most memorable moment of his football career.

The Durand Cup victory with Dempo was particularly sweet. Playing alongside Nigerian striker Ranti Martins, Ahmed showcased the technical brilliance that would become his trademark. His ability to drift between positions, his vision to pick out impossible passes, and his knack for scoring crucial goals made him indispensable to the team’s success.

Now 41, Ahmed continues to dream, continues to inspire, continues to prove that legends aren’t just made by what they achieve, but by how they use their achievements to light the path for others. He has found his calling in coaching. In every tactical decision he makes from the touchline, in every word of encouragement he offers his players, in every moment he stands as a symbol of possibility for young Kashmiris, Ishfaq Ahmed writes new chapters in his enduring love story with the beautiful game and the tournament that has been his faithful companion through triumph and heartbreak alike.
