Mohun Bagan Super Giant

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, commonly known as Mohun Bagan, is a prestigious professional sports club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Established in 1889 with a primary focus on football, it stands as one of Asia’s oldest clubs. The football division, currently named Mohun Bagan Super Giant due to ownership reasons, competes in the Indian Super League, the top-tier of Indian club football.

A defining moment in the club’s history came in the 1911 IFA Shield final when they achieved a historic victory over the East Yorkshire Regiment. This triumph made Mohun Bagan the first all-Indian club to win a championship against a British club, playing a significant role during India’s push for independence.

With an impressive track record, Mohun Bagan has won the top-flight football league six times—three in the National Football League, two in the I-League, and one in the Indian Super League. Their success extends to the Federation Cup, where they hold a record 14 championships. The club has also earned numerous other prestigious trophies, including the Durand Cup (16 times), the IFA Shield (22 times), the Rovers Cup (14 times), and the Calcutta Football League (30 times).

Mohun Bagan’s annual clash with long-time local rivals, East Bengal Club, in the Kolkata Derby remains one of Asia’s oldest and most fiercely contested rivalries, with the first derby match played on 8 August 1921.

As one of the founding members of the National Football League in 1996, Mohun Bagan has maintained its position in the top-tier league of the country and has never faced relegation. In 2019, the club achieved further recognition, being inducted into the Club of Pioneers, a network of the world’s oldest existing football clubs, marking its 130th year of existence.
